African Women International (AFWI Work)
AFWI works under thematic areas Creating safe spaces for young women within non-traditional trades. The advocacy activities seek to increase awareness on non-traditional trades as well as the legal framework against sexual harassment among students and teachers in two Vocational and Technical institutions in Sekondi-Takoradi. As part of this initiative, AFWI will design appropriate and gender-sensitive communication messages to increase awareness of students and teachers on complaints and reporting mechanisms to address sexual harassment and abuse.
In addition, the initiative will enhance the knowledge, skills, and participation of young women in the non-traditional sectors in the two institutions. This will be achieved through mentorship and coaching sessions during which AFWI will collaborate with Women in Mining and Women in Energy to facilitate these sessions. The mentorship and coaching sessions will provide career guidance on how young women can overcome the barriers in high growth and non-traditional sectors. It will include field trips to learn and acquire inspiration from women in non-traditional sectors.

Kumasi Hive – Kumasi
Kumasi Hive works under the thematic area on “Increasing Young women’s enrollment and participation in non-traditional trades”. The goal of the activity is to trigger social and behavior change and break stereotypes against women in non-traditional trades. Planned activities include community engagement with young women, community members, and other relevant stakeholders’/interest groups and institutions to discuss ways of ensuring young women’s inclusion in non-traditional trades.
As part of the grant activities, the team from Kumasi Hive embarked on a number of advocacy campaigns to sensitize the people within five selected communities within the Kumasi metropolis which include Tafo, Suame, Krofrom, Kwadaso, and Kentinkrono, targeting schools, churches, families, associations, media houses, organizations in TVET, but to mention a few.
The Kumasi Hive team engaged Agric Nzema Senior High School at Kwadaso and KNUST Senior High School to educate the students on TVET, the many opportunities coupled with the challenges, and furthering on to the perceptions that people have about women who consider TVET.
