As part of the implementation of the INVEST project’s Gender Equality objective to change social norms and public perception and to promote women’s economic participation in traditionally male-dominated trades, WUSC is implementing a comprehensive gender-transformative Male Engagement approach and participatory methodologies for the INVEST project geared towards achieving this goal.
As a result, INVEST contracted a technical assistants partner affiliated with Promundu, a male engagement organization with several years of programming experience on the subject, to design a curriculum for rolling out a series of targeted workshops in workplaces. This was also accompanied by community sensitization tool kits that will enable WUSC to broadly engage with men and boys on the same topics beyond workplaces to community settings where perception change is actually needed. Two versions of male engagement resources were developed by the consultants and reviewed by the WUSC gender team. A TOT workshop was organized to socialize participants from WUSC and our implementing partners on the male engagement resources.
The ToT workshop was a step towards preparing the different teams to directly engage with different participants within workplaces and communities using the different tools and resources. The regional facilitators from 3 implementing partner organisations were The Otumfuo Foundation, Sekondi Takoradi Chamber of Construction and Industry (STCCI), and Artisans Association of Ghana (AAG) for Kumasi, Takoradi, and Greater Accra respectively
This process equipped and prepared the team of Male Engagement facilitators with knowledge and skills to implement a series of targeted workshops and community awareness sessions aimed at promoting positive masculinities and promoting the dignity of women in nontraditional trade sectors. In the month of December, STCCI will engage two men’s groups in the region to discuss the role of men in addressing GBV, in particular workplace harassment and women’s participation in male-dominated trades.
